Skinny: Picking the 2006 New York champion third may raise a few eyebrows. Critics would say that he's run three marathons since winning New York and he placed no higher than eighth in any of them. It's true that dos Santos was eighth in London and New York last year and that he didn't finish the 2008 Olympics. However, he has proven since winning in New York that his victory was by no means a fluke and by no means should he be considered a one hit wonder. In 2007, dos Santos set the South American record in the half marathon when he ran 59:33 to get 7th at the World Championships, totally legitimizing his upset win in New York. After dropping out of the Olympics, dos Santos rebounded and took eighth in the World Half Marathon Championships last month in his native Brazil. At the very least, it shows us he's in pretty good shape. And given his win in 2006 in the marathon in New York and his 2nd place showing in the Healthy Kidney 10k last May, it's clear that dos Santos enjoys running in the Big Apple. We do have one major reservation about dos Santos. In running, there are very few races that are bigger than the ING New York City Marathon. The Olympic marathon certainly is bigger, and the World Half Championships in his native Brazil likely were a bigger deal for him as well. We're thinking he probably trained to train to peak at one or both of those races and not New York. If that's the case, we're worried he won't quite run up to our expectations, as it's nearly impossible to do well in New York if it isn't your primary focus for the fall.
